A characterization of male sexual partners of adolescent girls and young women in urban DREAMS districts in Mozambique

Join MEASURE Evaluation on August 23, 2018, at 9:00am EDT for a webinar sharing the results of a study on the characteristics of male sexual partners of adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in Mozambique. The webinar will be led by MEASURE Evaluation’s Jenifer Chapman, Nena do Nascimento, and Mahua Mandal.

Globally, AGYW, ages 15–24 years, are disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS. One strategy for preventing HIV infection among AGYW is to prevent their HIV-negative male sexual partners from acquiring HIV and to reduce the infectiousness of their male partners who are HIV-positive. However, little is known globally about the characteristics of AGYW’s sexual partners, which constrains efforts to reach them with HIV services and thus limits efforts to ultimately reduce HIV prevalence among them. The United States President’s Emergency Fund for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), through the Determined, Resilient, Empowered, AIDS-free, Mentored, and Safe (DREAMS) Initiative, has called on U.S. government missions overseas to address this knowledge gap through studies to characterize male sexual partners.

In response, USAID/Mozambique asked MEASURE Evaluation to undertake a study that would provide insights into the characteristics of men who have recently engaged in sexual activity with AGYW and factors that influence men’s engagement with HIV and AIDS prevention and care services. In this webinar MEASURE Evaluation will report out the results of this mixed-methods study, which included focus groups with 102 AGYW and a venue-based survey of 1140 men. The study was carried out in three urban/peri-urban DREAMS districts in Mozambique: Beira (Sofala provinice), Quelimane (Zambezia province), and Xai Xai District (Gaza province). Programmatic recommendations will be shared.

Speakers

Jenifer Chapman, PhD, is a technical director of measurement and learning at Palladium with more than 15 years of experience in global public health research, with a focus on children and adolescents. Jenifer is currently based in Mozambique.

Nena do Nascimento, MPP, is a monitoring and evaluation advisor with Palladium, where she has worked since 2012. She has more than ten years’ experience working in international development and global health, including more than eight years working on projects in Mozambique.

Mahua Mandal, PhD, MPH, has 15 years of experience in global public health and has conducted mixed methods research and evaluation in women’s and adolescent health for eight years.  As a monitoring & evaluation specialist with MEASURE Evaluation, Dr. Mandal leads or supports activities focused on youth, orphans and vulnerable children, and gender.
