Health Information System Strengthening to Promote Data Use: Lessons Learned from the Democratic Republic of the Congo
Join MEASURE Evaluation for a one-hour webinar on May 20 at 9am EDT. The webinar will highlight effective health information systems (HIS) strengthening interventions to improve data quality and data use in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
Despite significant resources invested in developing national HIS, the actual use of high-quality data to make informed decisions remains a challenge. In the DRC, MEASURE Evaluation has been working with the Ministry of Public Health and the National Malaria Control Program to improve data quality and increase the use of malaria information at all levels of the health system. MEASURE Evaluation used the Health Information System Strengthening Model to identify and prioritize interventions to strengthen elements of the HIS, including the rollout and implementation of the electronic routine health information platform (DHIS 2), building local capacity in monitoring and evaluation (M&E), and establishment of 77 centers of excellence to improve facility-level health information generation and use.
This webinar will discuss the outcomes of priority HIS strengthening interventions in the DRC, with particular focus on how data was used to assess data quality, generate health statistics, develop information products, and review and interpret findings. The presenters will also discuss best practices and lessons learned in using data to improve an HIS and drive data-informed decision making to improve health programs.

Speakers
Michelle Li is a data demand and use specialist with MEASURE Evaluation, Palladium. She has ten years of experience in global public health, with expertise in M&E and the use of data in HIV and AIDS, malaria, and immunization programs. In her current role, she manages and provides technical assistance support for activities that build the capacity of teams to identify priority information needs and analyze, synthesize, visualize, and review health data to inform program and policy decisions. Michelle holds a master’s degree from the Harvard School of Public Health.
Lavanya Gupta, MPH, is an M&E associate at MEASURE Evaluation, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She monitors and evaluates the implementation of the project’s HIS strengthening work. Lavanya also contributes to project learning by synthesizing outcomes and findings to contribute to the evidence base of effective HIS interventions.
